IVC Filter

86% of Inferior Vena Cava (IVC) Filters Cause Serious Injury

“It is not the culture of U.S. medicine to report adverse events to the FDA.”

Dr. David Kessler, Former FDA Commissioner

Inferior vena cava (IVC) filters are used by doctors to prevent pulmonary embolism, a life-threatening situation in which a blood clot travels to the lungs.

In order to prevent this, doctors have been inserting thousands of small, spider-like metal devices (IVC) into patient’s’ veins designed to catch blood clots, and prevent them from reaching the lungs.

In 2010, the FDA reported that these retrievable IVC filters can be dangerous. Studies show that 86% of IVC filters may result in serious injury from device migration, vein perforation, or organ perforation.

Manufacturers did not warn of dangerous effects of IVC filters

Manufacturers of IVC filters including Bard, Cook, and Greenfield failed to warn patients and their doctors of the risks associated with their products. 86% of patients are facing dire consequences of IVC filters, including major organ and vein perforation as these devices break down, and ultimately fail inside the body. In addition to catastrophic internal damage, these devices often migrate from their original positions, making it impossible to remove without causing additional harm.

IVC Filter Lawsuits & Settlement Landscape

Thousands of lawsuits have been filed against IVC manufacturers for organ or vein perforation, and in the worst cases wrongful death. Settlement amounts have been kept quiet, but cases continue to grow. If you have experienced complications from an IVC filter made by Bard, Cook, or Greenfield after 2003, you may be eligible for financial settlement to help offset your healthcare costs.

IVC Filter Glossary of Key Terms

IVC Filters

A blood clot filter placed in the inferior vena cava to stop a blood clot from reaching the lungs, causing a pulmonary embolism. Usually IVC filters are placed if patients cannot take blood-thinner medication. They are often only intended for short-term use, but are sometimes left inside the body causing major problems like breakage, migration, and organ perforation.

Blood Clot

Gel-like clumps of blood. They help you stop bleeding in response to an injury or cut, but sometimes blood clots form inside your veins which can be dangerous.

Blood Clot Filters

Small spider-shaped, cage-like metal device designed to stop a blood clot from traveling to the lungs. Usually for people who cannot take blood thinners because of a pre-existing condition.

Blood-Thinners

Medication that either works to lengthen the time it takes to form a blood clot or prevent blood cells called platelets from clumping together to form a clot.

Deep Vein Thrombosis (DVT)

When a blood clot forms in the lower body (usually the leg). DVTs can be dangerous if they travel to the lungs.

Inferior Vena Cava (IVC)

A large vein that carries blood from your lower body to your heart. You can think of it like a freeway in your body to your heart and lungs.

IVC Filter Migration

When an IVC filter has moved, or continues to move from its original placement. This is very dangerous as the IVC filter itself could travel to the lungs, break apart and have further pieces floating in the body, and/or puncture organs along the way.

Organ Perforation

When surrounding organs are damaged due to an artificial input that is out of place.

Pulmonary Embolism

When one or more arteries in the lung become blocked by a blood clot which can lead to death.

Best Glucose Monitoring Kits Available At Walmart

I love Walmart. Not only can I pick up my groceries for the week, but I can grab some socks for my kids, put a bag of birdseed in the cart for my parakeets and even purchase a tent if I ever feel the desire to go camping (which isn’t very likely). If the apocalypse happens, I hope I’m in a Walmart where I know I can survive for years.

What is a Mass Tort Lawsuit?

A mass tort suit consolidates your claim with the claims of other people (plaintiffs) who have experienced harm from the same drug or device. The goal is to create the strongest case that the product was unsafe and caused serious harm to many people. And typically, a greater number of cases makes for a stronger case collectively. This united front usually results in more compensation for each of the plaintiffs.

Transvaginal Mesh Failure

Many mothers had no idea that their lives would change—some irreparably—following a “straightforward” surgery to correct pelvic organ prolapse (POP), a common complication of childbirth causing surrounding organs to bulge or sag into the vagina, putting pressure on the bladder and often inducing stress urinary incontinence (SUI). TVM (also called TVT) has been called a “catastrophic failure” of regulators and the health system to protect women. Many women who have undergone POP surgery using this device have developed acute, crippling pain that is often not taken seriously by their doctors, or worse, many doctors and manufacturer executives have turned female pain into the punchline of inappropriate jokes. Women are uniquely impacted by the attitudes towards pain management in healthcare, and due to the implant’s astronomical failure rate (roughly 1 in every 15 procedures) must become proactive advocates for themselves.
