On May 25 in Houston, 35 year-old firefighter Jeffrey Pavlock was awarded $1.2 million in his case against Cook, Inc., the manufacturers of his faulty IVC filter. Pavlock suffered blood vessel and organ perforations when his filter migrated and then embedded itself in a blood vessel. Subsequent surgeries to remove the faulty device have been unsuccessful thereby putting Pavlock at risk for increased blood clots and further medical complications, including death. Unfortunately, Pavlock was never warned about the possibility of these life-threatening problems before he had an IVC filter implant.Pavlock had surgery in 2015 and upon the recommendation of his surgeon, he had a Cook Celect IVC filter inserted into his vein to prevent a pulmonary embolism (PE) which could be caused by deep vein thrombosis (DVT). An IVC filter is a cage-like device that prevents blood clots from reaching the patient’s heart and lungs which can cause serious complications or even death. IVC filters are placed in the inferior vena cava vein - the largest vein in the body - and are usually temporary and are removed shortly after surgery. The problem is that many times these filters move around causing damage to surrounding tissues or organs or embed into tissue causing potentially fatal outcomes. In Pavlock’s case, his device perforated his aorta and small intestine and then became lodged in a blood vessel making it irremovable. For the rest of Pavlock’s life, he’ll need to be closely monitored to ensure that these barbs don’t cause further damage or risk.Pavlock is just one of over 8,000 cases that are being consolidated in federal courts.
